History
Aoi Aso Jinja is a National Treasure-designated shrine enshrined in Kamiaoii-machi, Hitoyoshi City. According to tradition, it was founded in Daido 1 (806), the early Heian period, and has been revered as the chief guardian shrine of the Hitoyoshi Kuma region. The shrine buildings including the main hall, worship hall, and gate tower are known for their ornate Momoyama period decorations and were designated as National Treasures in 2008. Enshrining Aso Daimyojin, it continues to be deeply cherished by local people as the god of abundant harvests, warding off calamities, and protecting the region from flooding of the Kuma River.
