History

Jodo-ji is an ancient temple of the Jodo sect located in Higashikubo-cho, Onomichi. It is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. The main hall and the two-storied pagoda are designated as National Treasures. The pagoda is particularly renowned for its beautiful vermillion lacquered appearance and has become a symbol of Onomichi. From the precincts, one can enjoy a scenic vista across the Onomichi Strait toward Mukaishima. The temple has long been beloved by many scholars and artists. It is also known as a temple with connections to Ashikaga Takauji. The stone steps leading to the precincts, characteristic of the hillside town of Onomichi, create a sacred space befitting a visit to cleanse the heart and offer one's prayers.
