Imamiya Jinja

Kyoto Kyoto 21 Murasaki Imamiya-cho, Kita Ward

History

Imamiya Jinja is a shrine founded in 994 during the Heian period in prayer to quell epidemics, and is famous as a shrine of protection from calamity. It enshrines Oomononushi no Mikoto, Kotoshiro no Mikoto, and Kushiinada Hime no Mikoto as its principal deities, believed to bring particular blessings of health longevity and good relationships. Known affectionately as the "Tama no Koshi Shrine"—a connection to the story of Keifu-in, mother of the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who rose from humble origins as a vegetable merchant's daughter to become the shogun's mother. The sacred stone within the grounds called "Aboke-san" carries the tradition that one's wishes will be granted if they gently rub it with their palm and can lift it feeling light. The "Aburimochi" sold along the approach path carries over 400 years of history and adds to the joy of a shrine visit.
