Itsukushima Jinja

Hiroshima Miyajima-cho 1-1 Hatsukaichi

History

Itsukushima Jinja is believed to have been founded in 593 CE by Saeki Kuratsuka during the reign of Empress Suiko. Taira no Kiyomori revered it as the tutelary shrine of the Taira clan and developed it into the magnificent seafaring shrine as seen today. It enshrines the three Munakata goddesses—Ichikishimahime, Tagorihhime, and Tagitsuhime—and is venerated as the goddess of the sea and safe passage. At high tide, the shrine appears to float upon the sea in a mystical sight befitting the sacred island. As one of Japan's Three Great Views and a UNESCO World Heritage site beloved worldwide, it is equally renowned as a shrine for romantic fulfillment.
