History

Kawasaki Daishi is formally known as Heikan Ji and is the head temple of the Chisan branch of Shingon Buddhism. According to tradition, it was founded when Kanemori Hirama retrieved a wooden statue of Kobo Daishi from the sea during the Heian period, and it was established together with Sonjun, a venerable priest of Mount Koya. Famous nationwide as the 'Great Master of Misfortune Removal,' it attracts over three million pilgrims during the first three days of the New Year, making it one of the Kanto region's most popular temples.
