Osaka Tenmangu is affectionately known as "Tenma no Tenjin-san" and enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the kami of learning. It is said to have been founded during the Heian period to console the spirit of Michizane. The Tenjin Festival held every July is known throughout the nation as one of Japan's three great festivals, and it bustles with excitement from the boat procession and the land procession.
