History
Katsuoji is an ancient temple of the Shingon sect founded during the Nara period, known as the 'Temple of Victory' where pilgrims from across the nation never cease to visit. During the Heian period, it prayed for the recovery of Emperor Seiwa's illness with miraculous results, and received the temple name 'Katsuoji' (Victory King Temple) meaning 'the temple that surpassed the king'. The grounds nestled deep in the Minoh mountains are filled with countless darumas offered in prayer, a sight both impressive and moving. It is cherished as one of the Kansai region's foremost power spots, where people from all walks of life come with earnest wishes to 'win' against life's many challenges.
