Danzan Jinja

Nara Sakurai Takeminoe 319 Sakurai

History

Danzan Jinja is a shrine enshrining Fujiwara no Kamatari, known from the Taika Reforms. The thirteen-tiered pagoda standing in the beautiful mountains of Takeminoe is truly one of Nara's iconic landscapes. The shrine's name derives from "Kataraii-yama" (the mountain where talks took place), where the future Emperor Tenji and Kamatari conducted secret discussions regarding the overthrow of the Soga clan. Spring brings cherry blossoms and autumn brings maple leaves of remarkable beauty, with the autumn foliage so splendid it is called "the Nikko of the Kansai region." Through the divine virtue of Kamatari, distinguished in learning and statecraft, the shrine grants wisdom and decision-making ability. The ancient buildings and the four-season beauty of the precincts move the hearts of all who visit.
