History
Ashiwa Jinja is an ancient and venerable shrine located on Ashiwa Mountain in Fukui City. It is known as a shrine with connections to Emperor Sutoku and possesses a history spanning over 1,500 years. Ashiwa Mountain is also beloved by Fukui residents as a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot, drawing many visitors each spring. According to legend, Emperor Sutoku was present in this area before his enthronement, and the shrine is worshipped as a deity of success and good fortune. Within the shrine grounds stands a weeping cherry tree over 350 years old, designated as a natural monument of Fukui Prefecture and known as the "Cherry Blossoms of Ashiwa." This shrine, harmonizing history and nature, continues to be cherished by many.
