Echizen Tōshōgu

Echizen Tōshōgu is one of the Tōshōgu shrines dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and was founded in Kanei 5 (1628) by Matsudaira Tadakatsu, the lord of Fukui Domain. It is said to have been established after Ieyasu paid a visit to Echizen Province before the Battle of Sekigahara. Throughout the Edo period, it received the reverence of the Fukui feudal government and elaborate shrine buildings were constructed, though regrettably they were destroyed in wartime bombing. The current buildings were reconstructed after the war, and the solemn atmosphere befitting a Tōshōgu remains intact. Drawing from the great achievements of Ieyasu, it is known for its blessings of victory and advancement in one's career, and many worshippers visit at crucial moments in their lives.
