History
Daisho-in is a Rinzai Zen temple founded by Mouri Hidetstugu, the first daimyo of the Hagi Domain, and is honored as the family temple of the Mouri clan. Since its founding in Kanbun 4 (1664), it has served as a mausoleum where the daimyo of odd-numbered generations of the Mouri family rest, enveloped in a solemn atmosphere. Known alongside Toko-ji in Hagi as a burial ground of the Mouri family, the temple grounds display a magnificent vista with rows of stone lanterns. As a precious cultural heritage where samurai and Buddhist cultures merged during the Edo period, it continues to inspire many people.
