Kitain

Saitama 1-20-1 Kosenbacho Kawagoe City

History

Kitain is an eminent temple of the Tendai school known as Kawagoe Daishi, with an old history tracing back to Jikaku Daishi Ryogen as its founder. During the Edo period, Tenkai Shogun, a close aide of Tokugawa Ieyasu, served as its chief priest, and it prospered as the ancestral temple of the Tokugawa family. Within the temple grounds remain precious buildings moved from Edo Castle, including the 'Room of Lord Iemitsu's Birth' and the 'Cosmetics Room of Lady Kasuga,' which are invaluable for history enthusiasts. Additionally, the stone statue group of the Five Hundred Arhats is awe-inspiring, with each arhat displaying a unique expression. It continues to be loved by pilgrims as a treasure trove of history and culture that can be enjoyed alongside the charming Edo atmosphere of Kawagoe.
