History
Yamaguchi Daijingu is a shrine of distinguished lineage founded in Keichou 9 (1604) when Mouri Terumoto was transferred to Yamaguchi, by enshrining a branch spirit of the Ise Shrine. Cherished as the 'Ise Shrine of the West,' it has been revered with Amaterasu Oomikami as its principal deity. Throughout the Edo period, it received the deep reverence of the Mouri Domain, and visits by daimyo were frequently made. Today, it continues to be a spiritual mainstay of Yamaguchi citizens, welcoming numerous visitors throughout the year, beginning with New Year's celebrations, offering the same divine virtues as the Ise Shrine.
