Atago Jinja
History
Atago Jinja is enshrined at the summit of Atago Mountain in Minato Ward. It was established in the 8th year of Keichō (1603) by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu as a shrine dedicated to the god of fire prevention, making it a shrine of distinguished origin. Atago Mountain, at 26 meters elevation, is the highest natural mountain in Tokyo's 23 wards and is famous for its "Steps to Success." In the Edo period, the legendary account tells of Magarikaki Heikurō riding a horse up these steep stone steps and plucking a plum blossom before Tokugawa Iemitsu, which led to the steps being called the "Steps to Success." As the deity of fire prevention, the shrine has long protected Edo, and today it continues to receive many visitors praying for improved work fortune and success in advancement. Despite its location in the heart of the city, this is a special shrine with a mysterious atmosphere.
