Atago Jinja

Atago Jinja is an ancient shrine dedicated to the kami of fire, located at the summit of Atago Mountain in Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City. From the 60-meter-high mountaintop, one can overlook the Fukuoka cityscape and Hakata Bay in a spectacular view of sacred beauty. Since ancient times, it has been revered as a kami protecting against fire, and it is said that during the Edo period, the Kuroda clan, lords of Fukuoka Domain, held it in deep esteem. Today, it remains crowded with many worshippers during New Year visits, continuing to be loved by the people of Fukuoka.
