History

Byakko

Matsue Jinja was established during the turbulent Meiji Restoration period, making it a relatively modern shrine. It enshrines deities with connections to the Matsudaira clan, the lords of Matsue domain, and continues to be beloved by local residents as the guardian deity of the castle town of Matsue. Located directly beneath Matsue Castle, the shrine exudes a dignified and refined atmosphere befitting a samurai town. Many visitors stop by during castle tours, and the opportunity to pay respects while immersed in historical romance is its great charm.
