History

Meiji Jingu, enshrined in Yoyogi, Shibuya Ward, was founded in 1919 enshrining Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Though a relatively new shrine, its prestige and spiritual power are among Japan's finest. Despite being in the city center, it is surrounded by approximately 700,000 square meters of sacred forest. The shrine's precincts are formed by approximately 100,000 trees donated from throughout the nation. It boasts the highest number of New Year visitors in Japan, with over 3 million people visiting annually. Visitors never cease to come seeking to honor the virtues of Emperor Meiji and praying for marital harmony and household safety. It is particularly popular as a wedding venue.
