History

Byakko

Kamitsume Jinja is an ancient shrine enshrining Izanami Ōkami, the ancestral deity of the Izumo Kokuso, and it possesses the oldest existing Taisha-style main hall (designated a National Treasure)—a shrine of great prestige. Said to have been founded in the age of the gods, it is also reputed to be more ancient than Izumo Taisha, making it a venerable sacred site. The name of this shrine, read as "Kamosu," carries the deep meaning that the spirit of the gods dwells within it. The beautiful Taisha-style architecture of the main hall is a precious cultural property that conveys the construction methods of the age of the gods to the present day, and its solemn appearance fills the hearts of those who pay respects with sacred feeling.
