History

Byakko

Tatsutomi Jinja is enshrined in Nagae, Onomichi City, and is one of the representative ancient shrines of Onomichi. As the deity guarding the tatsutomi (northeast) direction—that is, the demon gate—it has long gathered faith in protection from misfortune and directional calamities. Traditionally said to have been founded during the Heian period, it has walked through history alongside the development of Onomichi's town and harbor. The view overlooking the Seto Inland Sea from its grounds is spectacular and has been beloved by many literary figures. Today it continues to serve as the guardian deity of Onomichi, gathering the faith of local people.
