History

Byakko

Tachimoto Shrine in Kainan City, Wakayama, enshrines Tajimamori-no-Mikoto, the deity of sweets, and the kami of Kumano. According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Emperor Suinin commanded Tajimamori to journey to the eternal land and bring back the tachibana orange, ancestor of the modern mikan. The site is also the former location of Tokosaka-oji, one of the Kumano Ninety-Nine Oji stations, designated as a prefectural historic site. A wooden plaque dated 1437 remains. Each October 10th, the Mikan Festival is held in honor of his legendary journey.
