Rakhanji is a renowned temple surrounded by the beautiful nature of Yamakei in Honzeyamakei Town, Nakatsu City. It is known as one of Japan's three major collections of five hundred rakan images, with many rakan statues enshrined within. Located in a particularly mystical place within Yamakei, famous for its strange and fantastic rock formations, it has prospered since ancient times as a sacred site for spiritual practice. A rakan is an enlightened sage, and this temple houses five hundred rakan images that watch over pilgrims. Each rakan image has a different expression, and it is said that among them one will always resemble a person one knows, allowing many visitors to feel a sense of intimacy during their worship.
