History

Byakko

Nyoi-zan Jinkaku-ji, a Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple in Bungo-ono, Oita Prefecture, is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki at the imperial request of Emperor Shomu during the Tenpyo era (729-749). Its principal image is the Eleven-faced Thousand-armed Kannon, which has received the prayers of many people over the centuries. Though the temple fell into decline during the Warring States period, it was revived in the Edo period under the patronage of the Naokawa clan, lords of the Oka domain. Ancient cedar trees throughout the precincts evoke the deep spiritual history of this sacred mountain.
