Hōon-in is a temple of the Shingon-shu Daigo sect located in Chuo Ward, Osaka. Its mountain name is Kotsu-zan, and its principal image is Fudo Myo-o, the Immovable Wisdom King, whose fierce flames are said to purify the earthly desires of all who seek refuge here. Temple tradition holds that the temple was founded by the monk Kukai, known posthumously as Kobo Daishi. Situated in the thriving temple-town that grew around Kōzu-gu Shrine, Hōon-in has served as a place of prayer and solace for the people of Osaka through the Muromachi and Edo periods and into the present day.
