History
Takayama Inari Shrine is celebrated for its striking row of red torii gates that wind up a hillside overlooking the Tsugaru plain and the Japan Sea. Founded around the Oei era (1394-1427), the shrine enshrines the Inari deity, guardian of agriculture, fisheries, and commercial success. The vermilion gates were donated by worshippers over generations, each representing a fulfilled prayer or a heartfelt wish. From the hilltop precincts, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the Tsugaru lowlands stretching toward the sea. The shrine grounds are also adorned with numerous stone fox statues, the sacred messengers of Inari, to which visitors pay their respects.
