Himuro Jinja is an ancient shrine situated in Kasugano-cho, Nara City. True to its name, it is well known as a shrine with deep connections to ice storage facilities (himuro) from ancient times. Beginning in the Nara through Heian periods, people involved in the management of ice, which was highly valued at the imperial court and among the nobility, enshrined the deity of ice. It has been devoutly worshipped particularly by those engaged in ice-making and refrigeration industries, and in modern times food-related professionals and those in the culinary business frequently visit to pay their respects. As a shrine with a cool and serene atmosphere, it attracts many visitors especially on hot summer days, and is a hidden gem of Nara.
