Tonoki Shrine, enshrined in Toishi, Takaishi City, Osaka, is a shikinaisha — a shrine listed in the Engishiki. Read as 'Tonoki' or 'Tonogi', its name is said to derive from an ancient local place name. The principal deity is Susanoo-no-Mikoto, revered for protection against evil, driving away pestilence, and granting an abundant harvest. The shrine served as an important spiritual center for the farming communities of this area. During the Edo period it functioned as the local tutelary shrine, and was designated a village shrine (sonsha) under the Meiji social ranking system. It continues to serve as a quiet place of prayer for the local community.
