History
FutagoJi is an ancient temple located midway up FutagoMountain, the sacred peak of the Kunisaki Peninsula. Said to have been founded by the bodhisattva Nimon during the Nara period, it served as a central institution in Kunisaki Half-Island's unique mountain Buddhist culture. As a headquarters of the mountain Buddhist culture peculiar to the Kunisaki Peninsula, it was a sacred place where many monks undertook rigorous ascetic training. Enveloped by the rich nature of FutagoMountain, the experience of ascending stone steps during worship purifies both body and mind. With numerous cultural treasures including Niō statues, it is truly a repository of history and faith.
