History

Byakko

Iko-ji, bearing the mountain name Takizosan, is a temple of the Rinzai Tofuku-ji sect in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture. Its predecessor, Sokan-ji of the Tendai sect, was founded in 1363. After falling into ruin during the Sengoku period, the seventeenth lord of the Masuda clan, Masuda Munekane, revived the sub-temple Iko-ji, which then became the main temple. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. The garden, said to have been designed by the renowned artist Sesshu during the Bunmei era, is designated a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty. The main gate is said to have been relocated from the main entrance of Masuda Castle.
