History

Byakko

Ikokunitama Jinja is affectionately known as "Ikutama-san" and is one of the oldest shrines in Osaka. Founded during the reign of Emperor Jinmu, it possesses an exceptionally ancient and distinguished history. The shrine enshrines Ikushima Okami and Tarushima Okami, deities of the land, and is regarded as the very birthplace of Osaka. During the Edo period, it flourished as the center of Kamigata culture and even served as the stage for Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater productions, making it culturally significant. Even today, it maintains strong patronage from those in the entertainment industry and continues to support Osaka's culture and performing arts.
