History

Byakko

Hamada Gokoku Jinja stands on the site of Hamada Castle in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. It was founded in 1938 as Hamada Shokonsha, a shrine to enshrine the spirits of the war dead, and was renamed Gokoku Jinja the following year. Approximately 23,000 souls from the former Iwami Province who gave their lives in service to the nation from the Meiji Restoration onward are enshrined here. After World War II the shrine was temporarily known as Kameyama Jinja, but it resumed its original name after Japan regained sovereignty. Within the grounds stand a statue of bugler Kiguchi Kohei and a monument to Shimamura Hōgetsu.
