History

Kiryu Tenmanguu is an ancient shrine enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the deity of scholarship, and is said to have been invited by the Kiryu clan during the Muromachi period. As Kiryu prospered as an ancient center of textile weaving, the shrine was venerated with the wishes of craftsmen for the improvement of their skills. Within the temple grounds stands an ancient sacred tree with a history of centuries, continuing to watch over the town of Kiryu. During the Edo period, along with the development of Kiryu Shinmachi, many merchants and craftsmen came to worship, seeking not only academic achievement but also benefits of commercial prosperity. Today, many students, examination candidates, and technicians continue to visit, making it the guardian deity of learning and craftsmanship in Kiryu.
