History
Iwakiyama Jinja is enshrined at the foot of Mount Iwaki, called the Tsugaru Fuji, and is the most prestigious shrine in the Tsugaru region. Beloved as "O-Iwaki-sama," it has long been cherished as a spiritual home for the people of Tsugaru. Mount Iwaki itself is venerated as the sacred body of the deity, and as a sacred site of mountain worship, many ascetics and worshippers visit. At the annual Mountain Pilgrimage, one of the major festivals in the Tohoku region takes place, with tens of thousands of pilgrims climbing while chanting "Sai-gi, Sai-gi."
