Shakuma Jinja stands atop Mount Shakuma in Yayoi, Saiki City, Oita Prefecture — also known as Shakuma-sama and Shakuma Daigongen. According to shrine records, it was founded in 757 CE (Tenpyo-Hoji 1), enshrining three deities: Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke Omikami, and Shakumahime no Mikoto. A sacred site of Shugendo mountain asceticism since ancient times, it embodies the deep union of mountain worship and Shinto. Revered for maritime safety and protection from calamity, the shrine continues to watch over the sea and mountains of Saiki from its lofty summit.
