History

Byakko

Tennen-ji is an ancient Tendai temple located in the Kunisaki Peninsula, Bugokata City, Oita Prefecture. Its mountain name is Nagaiwaya-zan. The main hall enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha, while the lecture hall venerates Kannon Bosatsu. As the ninth sacred site of the Rokugo Manzan pilgrimage circuit, it is counted among the holy places of Shugendo asceticism. The image of Fudo Myo-o standing in the river and the Mumyo Bridge convey the rigor of ancient practice. The temple grounds are designated a National Scenic Beauty, where nature and faith form a mysterious, unified atmosphere.
