History

Byakko

Tennen Ji, known as an important sacred site of the Rokugo Manzan, is an ancient temple with a long history as a center of Shugendō ascetic practice. Flourishing as the center of mountain worship in the Kunisaki Peninsula, it was a place where many mountain practitioners undertook rigorous ascetic training. Historic sites related to ascetic practice, such as Senno Fudō and Mumyō Bridge, are scattered throughout, and one can still feel the atmosphere of Shugendō from that time. Particularly striking is the image of Fudō Myōō standing in the river, presenting a mystical scene where nature and faith become one. It is a special place where one can purify body and spirit and gain new strength.
