History

Byakko

Yamagata Jinja is an ancient shrine nestled in the heart of Yamagata city, protecting the land and its people. Named after the mountains that surround the basin, it has long served as the tutelary deity for the region. During the Sengoku period, it received patronage from the Mogami clan and flourished as the chief shrine of Yamagata castle town throughout the Edo period. Surviving the Meiji-era suppression of Buddhism and Shinto syncretism, it has remained a spiritual pillar for Yamagata residents to the present day. During seasonal festivals, it welcomes many worshippers and serves as an important venue for preserving Yamagata's culture and traditions.
