History
Uesugi Jinja is a shrine located at Marunouchi in Yonezawa, enshrining the warlord Uesugi Kenshin and Uesugi Takayama. It was established in the Meiji period on the site of the former Yonezawa Castle, the ancestral seat of the Uesugi clan, and the spirit of Kenshin, who valued "righteousness," and Takayama, renowned for his domain reforms, dwells within. Kenshin's sense of righteousness, known through the story of "sending salt to the enemy," and Takayama's indomitable spirit, expressed in the famous saying "If you will it, it will be done," have long given courage and hope to many people. The shrine is popular with students seeking academic success and those praying for victory, and is especially favored by examination candidates. It is a special place that purifies visitors' hearts together with Yonezawa's beautiful seasons.
