Matsugasaki Jinja is a shrine located in Matsugasaki Park on the site of the former inner citadel of Yonezawa Castle. Founded in 1902 as a branch shrine of Uesugi Jinja, it enshrines six figures associated with the Uesugi clan: Uesugi Yozan, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Naoe Kanetsugu, Hosoi Heishu, Takemata Masatsuna, and Noritobe Yoshimasa. Uesugi Yozan is renowned as an enlightened lord who revitalized the domain through his famous spirit of 'if you will it, it can be done,' and the shrine attracts many worshippers seeking blessings in academic achievement and success. The park is also celebrated as one of the finest cherry blossom viewing spots in the region.
