History

Byakko

Kehi Jingu is an ancient shrine situated in Tsuruga, a key strategic point on the Hokuriku Road. The enshrined deities are Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, and Kehi Daijin, the kami of the sea. Long cherished as 'Kehi-san,' it has been revered as a guardian of maritime traffic. The great torii gate that rises in the precincts is one of Japan's three great wooden torii gates, alongside the Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima and Kasuga Taisha in Nara. Its beautiful vermillion-lacquered appearance is truly a symbol of Tsuruga. Matsuo Basho also visited this place and composed poems here.
