History

Byakko

Kanda Shrine in Kaizuka City, Osaka, was established around the Tenbun era (1532-1555) when the formation of the Kaizuka temple district brought together two local shrines: a bovine-headed celestial king shrine from Umitsuka Village and a Tenjin shrine from Hori Village. A small sanctuary was built in 1587 and a more substantial main hall was constructed in 1648. The enshrined deities are Amaterasu Omikami, Susanoo no Mikoto, and Sugawara no Michizane. Formerly ranked as a township shrine (goshi), it served as the tutelary deity for the Kaizuka temple district under the patronage of the Okabe clan of Kishiwada domain. The drum float festival held on the third weekend of July continues as a beloved summer tradition.
