Sotokuji Temple in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, known by the popular name Awashimado, is a temple of the Nishiyama Jodo sect. Its mountain name is Fukuchisan and the principal object of worship is Amida Nyorai. Since ancient times, the temple has attracted fervent devotion as a guardian of women, offering blessings for sewing, needle work, and various wishes of women. It is also well known for memorial services for dolls, where worn-out dolls are carefully and compassionately laid to rest.
