About
History
Hokai Ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 1335 by Ashikaga Takauji on the orders of Emperor Go-Daigo to honor the memory of the Hojo clan after the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. Built on the former site of the Hojo clan's residence, it is affectionately known as the 'Temple of Bush Clovers.' Within the grounds are the graves of Hojo Takatsune and other members of the Hojo clan, telling of both the sorrows and splendor of Kamakura's history. In autumn, the grounds are adorned with beautiful bush clover flowers, attracting many pilgrims. As an ancient temple that has witnessed the turbulent passages of history, it continues to gather deep faith.
