History

Byakko

Engaku-ji is a distinguished Zen temple of second rank among Kamakura's Five Great Temples. It was founded by Hōjō Tokimune with the Zen master Mugaku Sogen as its opening priest to console the spirits of both armies who fell during the Mongol Invasions. The grounds are graced with numerous cultural treasures, including the National Treasure Shariden Hall, evoking the weight of long history. As a training monastery for pursuing peace of mind and enlightenment based on Zen teachings, it continues to serve as a place where many people face themselves in silence.
