History

Byakko

Kenchoji was founded during the Kamakura period by Hojo Tokiyori as Japan's first comprehensive Zen Buddhist training monastery. As the head temple of the Rinzai sect Kenchoji School, it invited Rankei Doryu from China to serve as its founding abbot. It was ranked first among the Five Great Temples of Kamakura and has produced many distinguished Buddhist monks. The grounds also enshrine Hanzobo Daigongen, and the entire mountain has been carefully preserved as a place of spiritual practice.
