History
Domyoji is an ancient temple with deep connections to Sugawara no Michizane. When Sugawara no Michizane visited this place, his aunt, the nun Kakuju, was practicing Buddhist discipline at this temple. A heartwarming story tells of how Michizane stopped at this temple to bid his last farewell when he was being demoted to Dazaifu. Subsequently, the temple developed alongside faith in Michizane and has been loved by many people as the shrine of the deity of learning. The temple grounds feature items connected to Michizane and beautiful plum blossoms that bloom magnificently in spring, drawing many visitors during the season.
