Saikyo-ji, located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a temple of the Shingon sect Chisan school, bearing the mountain name Koya-san and enshrining Kokuzo Bosatsu as its principal deity. Tradition holds that it was founded in 822 by Kobo Daishi Kukai, earning it the epithet 'Koya-san of the West.' During the medieval period it flourished as the prayer temple of the Hirado Matsuura clan, and it continued to receive reverence from domain lords through the Edo era. Today it remains a spiritual cornerstone of Hirado, drawing visitors seeking the wisdom and merit of Kokuzo Bosatsu.
