Kotari Jinja, enshrined in Higashi-Kotari, Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, is widely revered as the deity of feet and legs due to its name written with the characters for god and foot. Recognized as an Engishiki shrine by the imperial court in ancient times, it held the old social rank of village shrine. Rooted in the land of Nagaokakyo, generations of worshippers have come to pray for the protection of their legs and feet, and for safety on their journeys. The mystery conveyed by its distinctive name, combined with the deep faith of the local community, continues to draw many visitors. This ancient shrine has walked alongside the history of Nagaokakyo as a guardian of the region.
