History
Shinjuan is a sub-temple (tatchuu) of Daitokuji, the Rinzai Zen head temple in Kita Ward, Kyoto. It is closely associated with Ikkyuu Soujun, the iconoclastic Zen monk celebrated for his unorthodox spirit and sharp wit. As part of the Rinzai Zen tradition of Daitokuji, the temple preserves the essence of Zen practice in quiet seclusion. Shinjuan is normally closed to the public and opens only during special viewing periods, lending it an air of mystery. It stands as a rare place where Ikkyuu's free and unconventional spirit meets the rigorous traditions of Daitokuji.
