History

Byakko

Shonenji Temple was founded in 1587 at Fushimi Tanbabashi, Kyoto, by Seiya Teian of the Jodo sect, who participated in the Azuchi Religious Debate and received deep devotion from Oda Nobunaga. The temple enshrines the Migawari Kamashiki Jizo, a guardian deity said to have been bestowed by Nobunaga, revered for centuries for protection against misfortune and illness. It also preserves a rare Tara Bodhisattva statue from Tibetan Buddhism, one of the oldest of its kind in Japan. In autumn the temple opens its grounds to share blooming bush clover, earning the name Temple of Hagi.
