History

Byakko

Wakimiya Shrine, a former village-shrine (mura-sha) in Miyamoto, Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture, has served as the tutelary deity of the eastern district of the former Miyazu castle town. During the Edo period it flourished as a shrine favored by the townspeople, attracting wealthy merchants from across western Japan who arrived via the Kitamaebune coastal trade routes. The names of those merchants are still engraved on the stone fence enclosures, quietly preserving the memory of the shrine's prosperous past. Deeply rooted in the community of Miyazu, it has long been a place of faith for the people who lived and worked by the Sea of Japan.
