History

Suearata Shrine is an ancient shikinaisha (imperially-listed shrine) of Izumi Province, standing in Sakai — the birthplace of Sue ware, Japan's ceramic tradition. Also known as "Toki Omiya" (the Great Ceramic Shrine), it is famously enshrined as the Ebisu deity of pottery. Each January, the Hatsu-Ebisu festival draws craftsmen, manufacturers, and merchants who gather to pray for prosperous business in the new year.
